New Zealand brands looking at TikTok Shop face a frustrating reality: the platform has not launched in their market, has not announced plans to, and has not even confirmed a launch for Australia — a market six times larger.

If TikTok Shop is not yet on the roadmap for Australia (population 26 million, ecommerce market worth A$60B+), New Zealand (population 5.2 million, ecommerce market worth approximately NZ$7B) is almost certainly further down the list.

That does not mean NZ brands should wait. The cross-border opportunity is live right now, and the brands that build their TikTok Shop presence today will dominate when the market eventually opens.


Why New Zealand (and Australia) Are Not on the Roadmap

Market Size Prioritisation

TikTok Shop has expanded methodically: Southeast Asia (600M+ combined population), the US (330M), the UK (67M), and now selected EU markets (combined 400M+). The pattern is clear — TikTok prioritises markets with large populations and existing ecommerce infrastructure.

Australia and New Zealand combined represent roughly 31 million people. That is smaller than a single EU market like Spain or Poland. From a pure return-on-investment perspective for building payment processing, fulfilment infrastructure, regulatory compliance, and seller support in a new market, the Oceania region does not compete with the EU expansion currently underway.

No Confirmed Australia Timeline

This is the critical signal for NZ brands. TikTok has not committed to an Australian launch timeline despite it being one of the highest digital-adoption markets in the world. Per TikTok's own public statements, Australia is not on the confirmed list. If Australia is not confirmed, New Zealand is not even in the conversation yet.

Regulatory Environment

Both Australia and New Zealand have been among the more aggressive regulators of social media platforms. Australia's Online Safety Act and proposed social media age restrictions create a regulatory environment that complicates commerce launches. New Zealand tends to follow Australian regulatory direction on digital platform governance.

TikTok is unlikely to invest in building commerce infrastructure in markets where the regulatory landscape is actively shifting.

Realistic Timeline Estimate

This is speculative, but based on TikTok's expansion pattern: Australia is likely 12-24 months away (if it happens). New Zealand would follow 3-6 months after an Australian launch. That puts a realistic NZ TikTok Shop launch at 18-30 months from now — mid-to-late 2028 at the earliest.

That is a long time to wait. Which is exactly why cross-border selling via US or UK TikTok Shop is the play right now.

It does not need to be polished — TikTok rewards authentic, native content over production quality.
