Discounting on TikTok Shop is a double-edged tool. Run promotions well and you generate urgency, win the algorithm, and convert fence-sitters. Run them badly and you train your buyer base to wait for a deal, erode your average selling price, and make your full-price listings look overpriced by comparison.
Most brands that launch on TikTok Shop default to always-on discounting because it works in the short term. The brands that scale sustainably structure promotions deliberately, using deals to serve specific strategic purposes, not as a permanent pricing crutch.
This is the full breakdown of TikTok Shop's promotions system and how to use each tool without destroying your margin.
TikTok Shop's Promotions Toolkit
TikTok Shop Seller Center offers seven distinct promotion types. Each serves a different purpose, and using the right one for the right situation matters.
1. Flash Deals
Time-limited discounts on specific products, displayed with a countdown timer on the product listing and in the Shop tab. Flash Deals get prominent placement in TikTok Shop's discovery surfaces, the algorithm actively promotes Flash Deal listings to buyers browsing the Shop tab.
Best for: Clearing specific inventory, driving a spike in sales velocity for ranking purposes, and creating urgency during LIVE sessions. Flash Deals work best at meaningful discount depths (20%+) and short windows (2 to 6 hours).
Watch out for: Running Flash Deals too frequently on the same products. Buyers learn the pattern. A product that is "flashed" every weekend stops generating urgency, buyers simply wait.
2. Limited-Time Vouchers
Discount codes or automatic vouchers applied at checkout with an expiry date. Unlike product-level Flash Deals, vouchers apply store-wide or to specific product collections.
Best for: New customer acquisition (first-purchase discount codes), LIVE session exclusives ("use LIVE20 at checkout"), and email or social media campaigns where you want to track conversion from a specific source.
The critical rule: Vouchers distributed publicly (shared on social, posted in bio) will be used by existing customers as much as new ones. If the goal is new customer acquisition, gate the voucher, require an email sign-up, or distribute exclusively in a LIVE session where new audiences are most concentrated.
3. Buy X Get Y (BXGY)
Structured bundle promotions: "Buy 2, get 1 free," "Buy £50, get a free sample," etc. BXGY promotions increase average order value without reducing the per-unit selling price.
Best for: Multi-unit products (skincare routines, supplement stacks, accessory bundles), introducing complementary products to existing buyers, and increasing the perceived value of a purchase without headline price discounting.
The margin maths: In a "buy 2 get 1 free" promotion, you are selling 3 units at the price of 2, effectively a 33% discount on the third unit, not on the purchase. If your COGS are 30%, the free unit costs you 30% of the free unit's selling price. This is often better economics than a 25% straight discount across all units.
4. Spend X Save Y (Tiered Discounts)
Discount tiers based on cart value: "Spend $40, save $5 / Spend $70, save $15 / Spend $100, save $25." This promotes order size without committing to a flat discount.
Best for: Brands with a range of complementary products, where the goal is to increase basket size. A buyer who came to purchase one $35 product can be incentivised to add a $20 complementary product to unlock the $40 threshold.
How to set thresholds: Set the first tier above your current average order value. If your AOV is $32, set the first tier at $40. Most buyers adding one more item to cross the threshold will do so if the deal is visible at checkout.
5. Shipping Vouchers (Free Shipping Promotion)
Free or discounted shipping for qualifying orders. TikTok Shop displays shipping cost prominently in the checkout flow, it is a visible friction point that causes cart abandonment.
Best for: Lower-priced products where shipping cost represents a significant percentage of the total (a $12 product with $4 shipping feels expensive; remove the shipping and the purchase makes sense). Also effective as a loyalty incentive for repeat buyers.
The economics: Free shipping is a cost you absorb. Model the order value threshold at which free shipping is margin-positive: if your 3PL or FBT cost is $3.50 per order, free shipping on orders above $30 is more sustainable than free shipping on all orders.
6. New Customer Offers
A dedicated promotion type targeting buyers who have never purchased from your store. New Customer Offers only apply to accounts with zero prior purchase history with your brand.
Best for: Acquisition campaigns where you want to subsidise the first purchase without discounting for existing customers. This is the cleanest version of a first-purchase incentive, it cannot be used by existing buyers.
How to structure it: A meaningful but not excessive first-purchase discount (10 to 20%) paired with a product experience that delivers on the purchase promise. The goal is lifetime value, not a one-time transaction. New customers who have a great first experience become repeat buyers and potential word-of-mouth amplifiers.

7. Bundle Discounts
A specific discount on a pre-configured product bundle listed as its own SKU in your catalogue. The bundle is listed at a price below the sum of individual component prices.
Best for: Standardising your best-selling combinations (the "starter kit," the "complete routine," the "pack of 3") at a price point that clearly signals value over individual purchase. Bundle SKUs also simplify affiliate content, a single "starter kit" SKU gives creators a clean recommendation with obvious value.
The Strategic Framework: When to Use Each Tool
For Sales Velocity and Ranking
Fresh products need initial sales velocity to build algorithmic ranking. Flash Deals are the most effective tool here, the combination of a prominent placement in the Shop tab and a time-limited offer drives concentrated purchase activity that signals to TikTok's algorithm that the product is worth promoting.
Run a Flash Deal within the first two weeks of a new product launch to establish its performance signal. Keep the duration short (2 to 4 hours), the discount real (20%+), and the promotion one-off rather than recurring.
For LIVE Session Conversion
LIVE-exclusive deals are your highest-conversion promotional format. The combination of real-time delivery, visible countdown, and the social proof of other buyers purchasing simultaneously creates buying conditions that no other format matches.
The most effective LIVE promotion structure: a normal price visible in the standard listing, with a LIVE-exclusive price that drops 15 to 25% for the duration of the stream. Make the exclusivity explicit, "this price is only available while we are live, the listing goes back to full price when we finish."
Use Limited-Time Vouchers distributed live (verbally announced, not posted publicly) for highest exclusivity perception. Buyers who stayed in the stream feel like insiders accessing a deal the public cannot get.
For Increasing Average Order Value
Spend X Save Y and BXGY are the right tools for order value expansion. They work by giving buyers a reason to add more to their cart without reducing the per-unit selling price.
The key to making these work is product range breadth and coherence. A buyer needs to see what they can add to qualify for the tier. Brands with a single hero SKU and no complementary products cannot effectively run order-value promotions. Brands with a coherent product ecosystem (step 1, step 2, step 3 of a routine; small, medium, large quantities; a hero product and multiple add-on accessories) are better positioned.
For Acquisition Campaigns
New Customer Offers are the cleanest acquisition tool in the TikTok Shop promotions kit. They let you price-subsidise the first purchase without discounting repeat customers.
Pair New Customer Offers with creator content targeting new audiences, influencer campaigns, GMV Max with prospecting targeting, or organic content reaching non-buyers. The offer is most effective when the buyer has not yet formed a price anchor for your product.
What Not to Do: Common Promotions Mistakes
Always-on discounting. Running Flash Deals every weekend, or maintaining a permanent "sale price" listed below your standard price, trains buyers to treat the discounted price as the real price. Your full price becomes a fiction, and buyers who buy at full price feel cheated when they see the sale price later. Structure promotions as genuinely exceptional events.
Discounting products with sub-50% gross margin. If your gross margin is 40%, a 20% discount takes your margin to 20% of the discounted price, before platform fees, affiliates, and shipping. Model the promotion economics at your actual margin, not a hypothetical.
Promoting returns-liable price points for impulse categories. Since the June 2026 policy change, products under $10 where a buyer requests a refund result in the buyer keeping the product and you absorbing the full cost. Flash deals that bring a $14 product down to $9.99 now expose you to 100% loss on returns. Price-band management matters more than it did before.
Competing with your affiliate programme. If you are running a 20% Flash Deal while also offering creators a 20% commission, your affiliate-driven sales are effectively unprofitable (20% discount + 20% commission + 6% fee = 46% off revenue before any other costs). Coordinate your promotions calendar with your affiliate programme. Either exclude Flash Deal periods from affiliate commission calculations, or run lower-commission rates during high-discount periods.
Promotion Stacking: What Buyers Can Combine
TikTok Shop allows some promotions to stack (apply simultaneously) and prohibits others. The current stacking rules:
- Platform-wide vouchers (issued by TikTok as part of seasonal campaigns) can stack with seller-created promotions
- Free shipping and a Flash Deal can stack
- Two Flash Deals on the same product at the same time cannot stack
- A New Customer Offer and a store-wide voucher on the same order may stack depending on configuration
Always test your promotion configuration in Seller Center preview before publishing. Unintended stacking that results in orders near or below cost is not covered by TikTok's promotions system, if you set it up incorrectly, you absorb the result.
FAQ
Do Flash Deals cost extra to run? No, Flash Deals are a free feature in Seller Center. The cost is the margin you give up on the discounted units.
Can I run promotions on FBT products and self-fulfilled products simultaneously? Yes. Promotion eligibility is not restricted by fulfilment method.
How far in advance should I plan seasonal promotions? For major seasonal events (Black Friday, 11.11, Prime Day equivalent periods), TikTok runs platform-wide promotional campaigns with dedicated placements. Applications to participate in these campaigns open 4 to 6 weeks in advance. Set a recurring calendar reminder to apply, missing the application window means missing the elevated platform promotion for that event.
Can affiliate creators use my voucher codes? Yes, unless you specify otherwise in your voucher configuration. If you want creator-exclusive codes that track attribution, set up individual voucher codes per creator (or per creator tier) rather than a single public code.
Does discounting affect my Account Health Rating? No, promotion activity does not directly impact your AHR score. However, if a promotion drives high return volumes (buyers order during a promotion and return at full value), the resulting refund rate will affect your AHR metrics.
