Boots, Sephora and Ulta Are on TikTok Shop. What That Changes for the Brands They Stock

Social Tale Team·September 2026

Three of the biggest beauty retailers in the West are now selling on TikTok Shop directly.

Ulta Beauty went first, in March 2026, and has since reported more than 100 million impressions from the channel. Sephora opened its US pilot on 19 September, trading as the Sephora Drop Shop with curated monthly product drops, creator content and LIVE. Boots goes live in the UK on 28 September with a selection of No7 skincare, its storefront, LIVE shopping and fulfilment run by THG Ingenuity, and further Boots brands promised over the coming months.

For every beauty brand that has spent two years parking TikTok Shop in the next-year column because of the retail relationship, the argument is over. Your buyer is not going to be upset that you sell on TikTok Shop. Your buyer sells on TikTok Shop.

What replaces that argument is a harder question, and most brands have not noticed it yet.

The conflict argument is dead, and it was always the weaker worry

The fear had three parts: that creator pricing would undercut the shelf, that TikTok sales would cannibalise retail sell-through, and that thousands of uncurated videos would drift the brand.

Price parity and a differentiated assortment answered the first two, and always did. We have written the full version of that in the Sephora and Ulta playbook and the Boots and Superdrug one, and none of it changes.

What changes is the conversation. A brand that walks into a range review in 2027 having sat out TikTok Shop is explaining its absence to a buyer whose own employer is trading there. The absence is no longer cautious. It reads as not knowing where the category went.

Being stocked does not get you carried

Here is the part to pay attention to.

Boots launched with No7. Its own brand. Not the several thousand brands on its shelves. Sephora launched with a curated drop, which is a slot, awarded, monthly, to a handful of partner brands. Ulta has been live for six months and carries a fraction of its range.

A retailer's TikTok Shop is not a distribution channel that your existing listing extends into. It is a second, smaller, more contested shelf, run to that retailer's merchandising priorities and stocked first with what it owns.

So the brands most exposed here are the ones that assumed retail presence would eventually carry them onto the platform. It will not. You either build your own storefront and creator programme, or you wait to be picked.

The category leaders are not retailers, and they are not household names

This is the part that answers "but surely the retailers will just take the category".

These are the biggest beauty and personal care shops on TikTok Shop US by units sold in August 2026, with the GMV each of them did:

Top US beauty shops on TikTok Shop
August 2026 GMV, from FastMoss's ten best selling beauty and personal care shops by units
medicube US Store K-beauty, 156 products, 131,014 linked creators $20.06M Dr.Melaxin K-beauty, 151 products, 64,856 linked creators $11.75M Tarte Cosmetics 158 products, 111,871 linked creators $9.01M BASED 54 products, 20,146 linked creators $7.60M BellaVitashop 188 products, 56,177 linked creators $6.26M Bare Anatomy Haircare 36 products, 26,150 linked creators $4.08M
Not one retailer in the ten, and e.l.f. at $1.35M is the only name most shoppers would recognise from a shelf. FastMoss, August 2026.

Not one is a retailer. Most are not names you would recognise from a shelf. medicube, a K-beauty brand operating through a single US entity, did $20.06M in a month, which is more than the next two combined. Dr.Melaxin did $11.75M from 151 products. BASED did $7.60M from 54.

The only broadly familiar retail brand in the top ten is e.l.f. Cosmetics, at $1.35M, ranked ninth.

Read that last line again if you sell beauty. A brand with national distribution, real brand equity and 81,257 linked creators is doing one fifteenth of what a K-beauty challenger with no shelf presence is doing on the same platform in the same month.

Roster size is not the answer either

The obvious conclusion from those numbers is "recruit more creators". It is the wrong one.

Linked creators
Size of the roster
medicube: 131,014 medicube 131,014 Tarte: 111,871 Tarte 111,871 e.l.f.: 81,257 e.l.f. 81,257 BASED: 20,146 BASED 20,146
GMV per linked creator
August 2026
medicube: $153 medicube $153 Tarte: $81 Tarte $81 e.l.f.: $17 e.l.f. $17 BASED: $377 BASED $377
Roster size is not revenue. These are linked creators, not productive ones, which is exactly why the spread is this wide: a large roster with a low activation rate reads as reach and earns like nothing. FastMoss, August 2026.

e.l.f. has 81,257 linked creators and earns $17 per creator per month. BASED has 20,146 and earns $377. That is a twenty-two times difference in what a creator relationship is worth, between two shops in the same category on the same platform.

These are linked creators rather than productive ones, and that is exactly the point. A large roster with a low activation rate reads as reach in a deck and earns almost nothing in a P&L. The lever is the share of your roster that actually posts and sells, which is a sampling, briefing and commission problem rather than a recruitment one. We took that apart properly in the activewear breakdown, and the arithmetic is identical in beauty.

What a stocked brand should do about this now

1. Stop using the retail relationship as the reason. It was the objection that made the decision easy to defer. It is gone. Whatever the real reason is, operational capacity, margin, or nobody owning it internally, name it and deal with that instead.

2. Assume you are not getting a retailer slot. If a Sephora drop or a Boots listing comes, treat it as upside. Building for it as the plan puts your channel strategy inside someone else's merchandising calendar.

3. Hold price parity anyway. Everything that made parity right when the retailer was absent still holds now it is present, and the scrutiny is higher, not lower. Differentiate with bundles, kits and minis the shelf does not carry, as in our bundle guide.

4. Fix activation before recruitment. Measure the share of your linked creators who sold anything last month. If it is under 10%, more creators will not help. Sampling cadence, brief quality and SKU-level commission are what move it.

5. Bring the numbers to your next range review. TikTok Shop velocity, creator video volume and branded search trend are now evidence a buyer understands, because the buyer's employer is measuring the same things on its own storefront. Our halo effect guide covers how that spillover is measured.

6. Count the window in months. Beauty and personal care did $2.08 billion on TikTok Shop US in the first half of 2026 on Circana's numbers, the platform's largest category. Retail entering it is a signal about where the demand already is, not a warning that it is about to be created.

FAQ

Does Boots, Sephora or Ulta selling on TikTok Shop mean my brand gets sold there too? No. Boots launched with its own No7 range, Sephora's Drop Shop is a curated monthly slot given to selected partner brands, and Ulta carries a fraction of its range. A retailer's storefront is a second shelf you have to win, not an extension of your existing listing.

Is channel conflict still a reason not to launch on TikTok Shop? It is hard to argue now that the retailers themselves are trading on the platform. The disciplines that made conflict manageable, price parity and a differentiated assortment, are still worth holding, and they are now table stakes rather than a defence.

Will the retailers take over the beauty category on TikTok Shop? Nothing in the data suggests it. The ten best selling beauty shops on TikTok Shop US in August 2026 were all brands selling direct, led by K-beauty challengers with no retail presence at all. The platform rewards creator programmes and content velocity, which is not what a retailer's merchandising operation is built for.

How many creators does a beauty brand need on TikTok Shop? Fewer than most brands assume, working harder. GMV per linked creator across the leading shops ranges from $17 to $377 a month, and the difference is activation rather than roster size. Fix the share of creators who actually post before recruiting more.

When did each retailer launch? Ulta Beauty in March 2026, Sephora's US Drop Shop pilot on 19 September 2026, and Boots in the UK on 28 September 2026. Dates and assortments change, so check the retailers' own newsrooms for the current position.

The Shelf Moved. Move With It

At Social Tale we run TikTok Shop for beauty brands as the demand engine that feeds every channel they sell in, retail included. If your brand is stocked at Boots, Sephora or Ulta and the channel has been deferred on a conflict argument that no longer exists, book a call and we will map what launching actually takes, assortment, pricing and creator programme included.

Retailer launch details are from Boots, Sephora and Ulta announcements and trade press, September 2026. Shop-level GMV, product counts and linked creator counts are FastMoss estimates for US Beauty and Personal Care, August 2026, and will not match seller-reported figures exactly. Linked creators are creators attached to a shop, not creators who sold. Category size for H1 2026 is Circana's. Retailer assortments on TikTok Shop are expanding, so check current listings before acting on any of this.
