If your brand already sells on TikTok Shop UK, you are sitting on an asset most US sellers would pay heavily for: a proven playbook for a platform they are still learning.
The US market it transfers to did $5.8B in GMV in the first half of 2025, up 120% year on year, roughly five times the size of the opportunity you are currently working. Same platform. Same mechanics. Same content formats.
Most UK brands stall at the paperwork, which is a mistake, the paperwork is the easy part. Here is what transfers, what does not, and the sequence of the move.
What Transfers: More Than You Think
The hardest part of TikTok Shop is not registration. It is the operating knowledge, and you already have it.
Platform mechanics are identical. Seller Center, the affiliate centre, open and targeted collaboration, GMV Max, shop health scoring, the US versions are the same systems you already run. Your team's muscle memory carries over on day one.
Content formats are identical. The demonstration video, the honest review, the "TikTok made me buy it" arc, these perform in the US exactly as they do in the UK. Your content library is a starting asset; your briefing system works unchanged.
Your commercial instincts transfer. You already know that hero SKUs beat catalogue listings, that commission architecture drives creator supply, and that shop health is not optional. A US-native brand learns those lessons expensively. You already learned them.
The UK-specific compliance work, Companies House registration, VAT, stays behind. The US asks for different documents, not different skills.
What Does Not Transfer
Four things break if you copy-paste the UK playbook.
Commission norms. The US creator market prices differently. Average affiliate commission runs around 13%, with open collaboration typically at 12-18% and targeted offers at 18-22%. Beauty runs 15-30%. If your UK rates are below these bands, US creators will not pick up your products, recalibrate against our commission structures guide before launch.
Creator landscape scale. The US creator pool is vastly deeper, which cuts both ways. Recruitment is easier, a seeding wave of 30-50 creators with a 20-30% post rate is standard, but so is being ignored. Creators receive far more brand outreach, so generic pitches get deleted.
Consumer expectations. US TikTok Shop buyers expect faster shipping confirmation, more aggressive discounting, and heavier social proof before purchase. Listings that convert in the UK often need sharper offers and more review volume to convert stateside.
Returns culture. US shoppers return more, dispute more, and expect friction-free refunds. Model a higher returns line into your margin maths than your UK P&L shows, and make sure your total platform costs, which run 35-55% of revenue all-in, still leave your hero SKUs at roughly 50%+ gross margin.
The Mechanics: What the Move Actually Requires
TikTok Shop US treats you as a cross-border seller, and the requirements are fixed.
A US entity with an EIN. Your UK limited company cannot register directly. You need a US-registered entity, typically an LLC through a registered agent, plus an EIN from the IRS. Formation is quick; the EIN is usually the pacing item.
The security deposit. Cross-border sellers pay a $1,500 security deposit per store, refundable if you exit in good standing.
US-based fulfilment. This is the one that surprises UK brands: TikTok Shop does not ship internationally to customers. Your inventory must physically sit in the US before you sell a single unit. Fulfilling from a UK warehouse is not an option.
Timeline: 4-8 weeks from decision to first live listing, with transatlantic inventory freight usually the long pole. The broader requirements are covered in our cross-border selling guide.
Running into this exact challenge?
We solve this for brands every day. Apply now and we'll show you exactly how we'd approach it for your brand.
You will also enter the standard new-seller probation, 30 days, capped at 50 orders per day and 100 listings, regardless of your UK track record. Plan the first month around it.
The Fulfilment Decision: FBT or US 3PL
With inventory forced onshore, you have two structural options.
FBT (Fulfilled by TikTok). You freight inventory to TikTok's network and the platform handles pick, pack, and delivery SLAs. The appeal for a UK brand with no US operations is obvious: no 3PL procurement, and fulfilment metrics that protect shop health by default.
A US 3PL. More control, multi-channel flexibility (the same stock can serve Amazon US or Shopify), and often better unit costs at volume. The trade-off is that you own the SLA risk from another continent.
For most UK brands: FBT or a TikTok-experienced 3PL for the first six months, then revisit once you know your US velocity. The full trade-off analysis is in our fulfilment guide.
The Timezone Problem, and How to Handle It
LIVE is one of the platform's highest-converting formats, and US prime time is the middle of the night in London. An 8pm East Coast LIVE starts at 1am UK time.
Three workable patterns:
- Target the overlap. A 5-7pm UK slot hits US lunchtime and early afternoon on the East Coast, not prime time, but a real audience, and sustainable for a UK team.
- Hire a US-based host. Once LIVE proves revenue, a US host running prime-time sessions is a straightforward hire, briefed asynchronously from the UK. Our LIVE selling guide covers structure and run-of-show.
- Schedule everything else. Shoppable video content is timezone-independent, schedule posts into US peak hours and let creators, already on US time, carry the always-on presence.
Do not skip LIVE because of the clock. Sequence it.
Sequencing: Which SKUs Travel First
Do not relaunch your UK catalogue. Relaunch your evidence.
Take your top one to three UK performers and test them against three filters: price lands in the $15-60 hero SKU sweet spot in USD, margin clears 50%+ after US landed cost, and the product's demonstration angle needs no UK cultural context to land. Our hero SKU strategy covers the selection logic.
Then run the standard launch sequence, hero SKUs, creator seeding, LIVE cadence, paid amplification last, as laid out in our launch playbook. Your UK data tells you which content angles to brief first; that head start is worth weeks.
One effect worth tracking: brands typically see a 10-30% halo on their other channels as TikTok Shop content drives searches and direct traffic. Watch your US Amazon and Shopify numbers after launch.
FAQ
Can a UK brand sell on TikTok Shop US directly? Not with the UK entity alone. TikTok Shop US requires a US-registered entity with an EIN, a $1,500 security deposit per store, and US-based inventory. The path is standard cross-border registration and takes roughly 4-8 weeks.
Can I fulfil US orders from my UK warehouse? No. TikTok Shop does not support international shipping to end customers. Inventory must be positioned in the US before launch, either with FBT or a US 3PL.
Do my UK TikTok Shop metrics carry over to the US shop? No, the US shop starts fresh, including the 30-day probation with its 50 orders per day and 100 listing caps. What carries over is your operating knowledge: content formats, briefing systems, commission logic, and the data on which products and angles convert.
Should I set the same affiliate commissions in the US as in the UK? Benchmark locally rather than copying UK rates. US open collaboration typically sits at 12-18%, targeted offers at 18-22%, and beauty runs 15-30%. Below-market rates get zero pickup in a more competitive outreach market.
How much larger is the US opportunity than the UK? The US market did $5.8B in GMV in H1 2025, growing 120% year on year, roughly five times the scale of the UK opportunity. For a UK brand with a working playbook, it is the highest-return expansion available.
