TikTok Shop is not live in Canada. There is no confirmed launch date, no beta programme, and no public roadmap that includes Canada. We covered the reasons in our Canada launch analysis, regulatory friction, market prioritisation, and the fact that TikTok is busy rolling out across Europe.
None of that stops a Canadian brand from selling on TikTok Shop US right now.
The US TikTok Shop is doing $10B+ in annual GMV, and cross-border registration is the intended mechanism for international brands to access it, not a loophole. Canadian brands are arguably better positioned for this than any other nationality of cross-border seller. Most already sell into the US. Many already have US entities. And the border is a truck ride, not an ocean freight lane.
This post covers the specific path for Canadian brands: what you need, what it costs, and why the brands moving now will own the Canadian market whenever TikTok Shop eventually arrives here.
Why Canadian Brands Have a Cross-Border Head Start
We work with international brands entering TikTok Shop US from several markets. The Canadian setup is consistently the fastest, for four reasons.
You probably already sell into the US. Most Canadian DTC brands with any scale are already doing cross-border volume through Shopify or Amazon US. That means the hard infrastructure questions, US entity, sales tax registration, US fulfilment, are often already answered. If you have a US LLC for Amazon, you can apply for TikTok Shop US with the entity you already own.
Inventory moves by truck, not by sea. An Australian brand entering TikTok Shop US ships inventory across the Pacific with 4-6 week lead times. A Canadian brand trucks inventory to a US 3PL in 2-5 days. That changes your working capital requirements, your restock agility, and your ability to react when a creator video takes off and sells through your US stock.
Your time zones match the US market. LIVE shopping is one of TikTok Shop's highest-converting formats, and it has to happen when US shoppers are awake. Canadian brands can run US prime-time LIVE sessions from their own office at normal working hours. Brands in Europe, Australia, and Asia are hosting at 2am or hiring US-based hosts.
Cultural fluency is built in. Your content team already speaks the US consumer's language, the trends, the humour, the references. Content that works for your Canadian audience largely works for the US audience without translation or repositioning.
What You Need to Sell on TikTok Shop US From Canada
The requirements are the same as for any cross-border seller. Here is the full list, with the Canadian-specific notes that matter.
A US business entity. TikTok Shop US requires a US-registered entity with an EIN and a US business address. If you already have a US subsidiary or LLC for Amazon or wholesale, use it. If not, a Wyoming or Delaware LLC through a registered agent service ($100-500/year) is the standard route. Timeline: 1-2 weeks for formation, 2-4 weeks for the EIN.
A US bank account or payment service. Canadian brands have an easier time here than most, Canadian banks with US arms (RBC Bank, BMO Harris, TD) offer US business accounts to Canadian companies, and cross-border payment services like Payoneer integrate directly with TikTok Shop.
The security deposit. TikTok Shop US requires a $1,500 security deposit per store for cross-border sellers. Refundable if you close in good standing.
US-based fulfilment. TikTok Shop does not support international shipping to end customers. Your inventory must sit in the US before you sell, either with a US 3PL or through FBT (Fulfilled by TikTok). If you already use Amazon FBA, Multi-Channel Fulfillment can bridge you while you evaluate a dedicated setup. Our fulfilment guide covers the trade-offs.
Customs and duties planning. Because you are importing inventory in bulk rather than shipping parcels to consumers, your goods clear US customs as commercial imports. USMCA-qualifying goods generally enter duty-free, but qualification depends on where your product and its inputs are actually made, a Canadian brand manufacturing in Asia does not get USMCA treatment. Confirm your tariff position with a customs broker before you commit inventory; the current US tariff environment changes quickly and it belongs in your margin model, not in your surprises column.

Sales tax registration. At minimum, register in the state where your inventory is stored. Most cross-border sellers use TaxJar or Avalara to automate multi-state compliance.
Total setup timeline: 4-8 weeks from decision to first live listing, and closer to 2-3 weeks if your US entity and fulfilment already exist.
The Margin Math
TikTok Shop US total selling costs run 35-55% of revenue once you stack the 6% referral fee, affiliate commissions (13-25% depending on category), payment processing, and any GMV Max ad spend. Returns add more in some categories.
For a Canadian brand, add freight to the US warehouse, customs clearance, and the CAD/USD exposure on your cost base. The practical bar: your hero SKUs need 50%+ gross margin in USD terms after landed cost. If the margin is not there, fix the unit economics before you enter, the platform amplifies good economics and punishes bad ones. Our fees breakdown has the full cost structure.
One genuine advantage: with your costs partly in CAD and your revenue in USD, the exchange rate has historically worked in Canadian sellers' favour. Do not build the business case on currency, but it is a tailwind, not a headwind.
The Playbook Once You Are Live
Entering as a cross-border seller does not change how the platform works. The same sequence applies as for any new seller:
- Launch with 1-3 hero SKUs, not your full catalogue. Visually demonstrable, impulse-friendly price point, margin to support 15-25% commissions. The full sequence is in our launch playbook.
- Expect the 30-day probation period, new sellers are capped at 50 orders per day and 100 listings while the platform validates your operations. Brands doing $10M+ in annual revenue may qualify for faster onboarding through Project Horizon.
- Build the affiliate engine immediately. US creators drive the majority of TikTok Shop sales. Open collaboration at a competitive commission, targeted outreach to creators in your category, and consistent sample seeding. Commission structure matters more than most brands realise.
- Use your time zone advantage. Get a weekly LIVE cadence running early, it is the format where Canadian brands can outwork every other cross-border seller.
The Strategic Payoff: First in Line When Canada Opens
Here is the part most Canadian brands underweight. Whenever TikTok Shop does launch in Canada, the launch pattern from every previous market will repeat: invite-only beta, limited categories, then gradual rollout. The brands invited first will be the ones with existing TikTok Shop track records, sales history, shop health, creator networks, content libraries.
A Canadian brand with 18 months of US TikTok Shop performance does not start from zero on Canadian launch day. It activates. Your US creator content is already in the format that works. Your team already knows how the algorithm, the affiliate centre, and GMV Max behave. Your competitors will be reading the seller onboarding documentation while you are taking orders.
We saw exactly this dynamic when Amazon launched in Australia and Canada: the brands already operating on Amazon US were profitable in the new market within weeks, while fresh entrants took 6-12 months to reach the same point.
FAQ
Can a Canadian brand legally sell on TikTok Shop US? Yes. TikTok Shop US supports cross-border sellers through US entity registration. There is no restriction on Canadian-owned businesses selling into the US market, and many Canadian brands are already doing it.
Do I need a US entity if I already have a Canadian corporation? Yes, TikTok Shop US requires a US-registered entity with an EIN. Most Canadian brands either use an existing US subsidiary or form an LLC. Talk to your accountant about the tax treatment; the setup is routine for firms that handle cross-border ecommerce clients.
Can I fulfil TikTok Shop US orders from Canada? No. Inventory must be in the US, TikTok Shop does not support international shipping to end customers. The good news for Canadian brands is that positioning inventory in a US 3PL is a truck ride, not a freight negotiation.
What does it cost to get started? Budget roughly $2,500-5,000 in setup costs (entity formation if needed, the $1,500 security deposit, initial 3PL onboarding) plus your first inventory position in the US. Ongoing platform costs run 35-55% of revenue all-in.
Should I wait for TikTok Shop to launch in Canada instead? No. There is no timeline to wait for, and the US market is larger than a Canadian market will ever be. Selling in the US now builds the exact capabilities, creator relationships, content systems, platform knowledge, that will make you first in line if and when Canada opens.
