The most dangerous number in a TikTok Shop auction is the starting bid. Set it too high and the room never warms up. Set it at $1 without a plan and you will sell a $90 item for $14 in front of 300 people, live, with no way to take it back.
That is the trade TikTok's auction format asks you to make. Countdown Bidding, which TikTok also calls LIVE Auctions, puts a real-time auction engine inside a TikTok LIVE. TikTok has been rolling it out to US sellers through 2025 and 2026, and it moves TikTok Shop straight into the format that built Whatnot.
It also arrives at a moment when LIVE is growing faster than the rest of the platform. TikTok told CNBC in September that its live shopping sales more than doubled in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, with live sessions up more than 60% and total live hours up more than 80%.
This guide covers how Countdown Bidding works, who can use it, which products qualify, and how to run an auction that builds a buyer base rather than giving stock away.
How Countdown Bidding Works
The mechanics are simple. During a LIVE, the seller or creator presents a product, sets a starting bid and a timer, and viewers bid against each other in real time. When the timer hits zero, the highest bidder wins and an order is created automatically.
There are two auction types:
- Fixed auction. The auction ends exactly when the timer hits zero.
- Extended auction. A new bid in the closing seconds resets the timer, so the auction runs until the bidding stops.
Auction listings are marked as auction-only, which removes the add-to-cart button. You can create a temporary listing inside LIVE Manager for a one-off item, or a permanent listing in Seller Center for products you auction repeatedly. Countdown Bidding is available from LIVE Manager on desktop and from the TikTok mobile app.
One rule catches sellers out: once an auction starts, you cannot change it. The timer, the starting price and the auction structure are locked. Every decision has to be made before you press start.
There is also a variant called Surprise Sets. Viewers bid for a mystery prize from a visible pool of products, and the winner's prize is revealed live. TikTok's own seller guidance tells sellers to disclose the minimum prize value, and you should treat that as non-negotiable.
Who Can Use It
Access is gated. TikTok's US seller guidelines for LIVE Auctions require:
- An Account Health Rating of at least 200
- No temporary account restrictions
- No violations of TikTok's Intellectual Property Policy
If your shop is carrying violations, fix that before you plan an auction strategy. Our Account Health Rating guide covers how the score works and how to recover it. Eligibility rules change, so check the current requirements in Seller Center before you build a calendar around the feature.
Which Products Qualify
This is the part most brands get wrong. Countdown Bidding is not open to every category. TikTok restricts it to categories and formats it expressly allows, principally:
- Collectibles. Trading cards, figures, limited-run toys and similar items.
- Pre-owned luxury. Authenticated second-hand bags, watches and accessories.
- Eligible Surprise Sets.
If you sell skincare, supplements or everyday apparel, auctions are not your format, and that is fine. Fixed-price LIVE selling with flash sales and live-only bundles still converts better for those categories, as our TikTok Shop LIVE guide explains.
Auctions suit products where scarcity is real: one-of-one items, numbered editions, sealed product with a known secondary-market value. Scarcity is what makes bidding rational. Without it, viewers wait for the price to drop.
Why Auctions Behave Differently From Fixed-Price LIVE
A fixed-price LIVE sells the same product to many buyers. An auction sells one item to one buyer, and everyone else in the room becomes an audience. That changes what the session is for.
Engagement is the product. Every bid is an interaction. A competitive auction generates the comment volume and watch time that tell the algorithm the room is worth promoting. Fixed-price sessions have to manufacture that energy with giveaways. Auctions create it by design.
Price discovery cuts both ways. Competitive bidding can push a sealed collectible above its usual market price. A thin room can also let it go far below cost. The outcome depends almost entirely on how many genuine bidders are watching when the timer starts.
The algorithm still needs time. The first one to two hours of any LIVE are the algorithm's learning period, when traffic is broad and poorly targeted. Running your best items in the first ten minutes means auctioning them to the wrong room.
How to Run an Auction That Protects Margin
1. Build the room before you auction anything valuable
Open with low-value items and low starting bids. They warm the room, teach new viewers how bidding works, and give the algorithm engagement to read. Hold your high-value lots until viewer count and comment rate have climbed.

2. Set starting bids against your floor, not against hope
Before the session, write down the lowest price you are willing to accept for every lot. For anything where losing money would hurt, the starting bid should sit at or near that floor. A $1 start works for items you are happy to sell cheaply in exchange for engagement. It is a terrible idea for your best stock.
3. Use extended auctions for high-value lots
Fixed timers reward last-second snipes and can end an auction while bidding is still rising. Extended auctions keep going while people are still bidding, which is where competitive pricing actually happens.
4. Tell the room what is coming
Announce the lineup early and repeat it every 15 to 20 minutes, because the room turns over constantly. Viewers stay for lots they want. "The numbered edition goes up after the next three" holds attention far better than a surprise.
5. Run auctions alongside fixed-price product
The strongest sessions mix both. Auction the scarce items and keep fixed-price product pinned for everyone who lost. A bidder who just missed out is your warmest buyer.
6. Disclose everything
Condition, grading, authenticity and, for Surprise Sets, minimum prize value. Auctions attract buyers who know the secondary market. One misdescribed item becomes a dispute, and disputes hit Account Health Rating, which can cost you access to auctions altogether.
Where Auctions Fit in a TikTok Shop Strategy
Auctions are a tool for specific categories, not a new default. For a collectibles brand or a pre-owned luxury reseller, they can become the centre of the LIVE programme. For everyone else, the lesson is the mechanic underneath: real scarcity and visible competition hold a room.

FAQ
What is Countdown Bidding on TikTok Shop?
Countdown Bidding is TikTok Shop's live auction feature, also called LIVE Auctions. A seller sets a starting bid and a timer during a LIVE, viewers bid in real time, and the highest bidder wins when the timer ends.
Who can run auctions on TikTok Shop?
TikTok's US guidelines require an Account Health Rating of at least 200, no temporary account restrictions and no Intellectual Property Policy violations. Requirements change, so confirm current eligibility in Seller Center.
What can you sell in a TikTok Shop auction?
Only categories TikTok expressly allows, principally collectibles, pre-owned luxury and eligible Surprise Sets. Most everyday consumer categories are not eligible.
Can you change an auction after it starts?
No. The timer, starting price and auction structure are locked once an auction begins, so set your floor price before you press start.
Should I use fixed or extended auctions?
Use fixed auctions for low-value lots that keep the pace up, and extended auctions for high-value lots, where late bids reset the timer and let competitive pricing play out.
